Australia wins Gold at Korolev 2006
 
Australia's team to the 14th International Space Olympics, held in Korolev,
Russia, have won Gold.
 
The team of ten Scouts and Guides captured Russia's equivalent of the Americas
Cup when team members Melinda Blake (17 years) and Sarah Connell (14 years)
won the Gold medal for Space Research and the Cosmonauts' Prize.
 
Seven of the Australian team finished in the top twenty of the 257 competitors
from Russia, Greece, Germany, USA and Great Britain.
 
The Aussies won three Gold medals, two Silver and a 4th and 6th in events ranging
from space technology to space literature.
  
Other events included mathematics, computer programming and physics.
 
Catherine Barker and Amy Spark won Gold in astrophysics, Keren Reynolds
and Tegan Davies won Gold in space technology, and Melinda Blake Gold in
space literature.
 
The team was coached by Anne Brumfitt, Education Consultant to ESA
Science and Director of Education for Space Qualified.
 
Australians were further honoured when Professor Lachlan Thompson and Anne
Brumfitt were invited on to the International Judging Panel for the
competition. The judging panel consists of 18 top scientists from the
Russian Space Industry and around the world. Their appointment will see
their involvement in the International Space Olympic for the next five years.
